Apprentice jockey Melanie Bolwell is now in a stable condition after a three-horse fall at Warialda in which popular senior rider Darren Jones lost his life.
Racing NSW safety officer Maurice Logie said doctors at the Gold Coast Hospital had determined Bolwell would not need surgery on a bleed around her brain.
"Melanie has a fracture in her neck and is having an MRI scan to determine the the treatment and a decision will be made if the ventilator tube can be removed in the next few days," Logue said in a statement.
"Doctors have also found a fracture in Melanie's ankle."
Leanne Henry, the other jockey to fall, has had an operation on a broken collarbone and is doing well.
