Observational on target for Easter Cup

Tuesday 11 April 2017, 3:30pm

After missing the Golden Mile win at Bendigo, jockey Tom Sadler will reunite with Observational in the Group Three Easter Cup at Caulfield with the opportunity to win the biggest race of his career.

Sadler rode Observational, trained by his father John, in his unplaced first-up run in the Cranbourne Cup before watching trackside as Craig Newitt guided the gelding to a last-to-first win in the Listed Golden Mile last start.

Observational had 54kg at Bendigo which is below Sadler's weight range but he will be back aboard in Saturday's Easter Cup (2000m) in which Observational has 55kg.

Sadler will be chasing his first stakes win.

"Fifty-six (kilograms) is about Tom's go but he was very quick to ring me last night to tell me that he would ride him at 55," John Sadler said.

"He only had 54 at Bendigo and Tom couldn't ride. It's a Group Three and hopefully the horse can reward him."

Observational ended a two-year absence from the winner's circle with his second Golden Mile last Saturday week.

His 2015 Golden Mile win was the import's first Australian start with his best finish between wins a close third in last year's Easter Cup.

Observational was formerly part of prominent owner Lloyd Williams' team and trained by Robert Hickmott before being sold to clients of Sadler's last spring.

The last-start win came at his fourth start for his new stable and John Sadler expects him to run well again.

"It was a good win and it was good to get him back (to winning form) but the way the race was run really played into his hands," Sadler said.

"But he was ready to run well if things went his way, and they did.

"He's flown through the race and is in really good shape. He's going to go there and run well again on Saturday."

Sadler changed some of Observational's training around, including schooling him over jumps, which got the desired result at Bendigo.

"I just thought he may have been having a bit of a lend of us and not doing his best so I just shortened his work, sharpened it up and mainly the schooling just got him right on song," Sadler said.

"He schooled this morning and he'll gallop tomorrow over a short journey and that will do him until Saturday."
