Kobayashi topples favourite at Caulfield

Saturday 29 April 2017, 4:09pm

Originally bought with the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast in mind, Kobayashi has made it two wins in succession with a stakes race win at Caulfield.

Kobayashi led throughout to score in the Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (1200m) on Saturday and in the process burst the bubble over the odds-on favourite Doubt I'm Dreaming.

Ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson, Kobayashi drifted from $5.50 to $8.50 before defeating Al Passem ($13) by three lengths with Doubt I'm Dreaming ($1.55) a half-length away third.

Co-trainer Troy Corstens said Kobayashi had been syndicated with a view to January's Magic Millions and the rich bonus as an all-female owned horse.

"We syndicated him as a ladies horse going into the Magic Millions, but that didn't come off," Corstens said.

"But he's a really talented colt and has a good future as a sprinter."

Corstens hates making raceday decisions saying options may include a trip to Brisbane or a spell for the son of I Am Invincible.

The trainer is concerned the 1400 metres of the Sires' Produce and the 1600 of the J J Atkins Stakes at Eagle Farm may be beyond the two-year-old.

"We'll get him home and have a good look at him and then we'll go from there, but I'm looking forward to the spring when he grows into himself," Corstens said.

Corstens said the colt reminded him of the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau.

Brazen Beau ran second in the BRC Sires' Produce and J J Atkins Stakes in Brisbane before returning as a three-year-old to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap.

Thompson said the colt was a little fierce early in the race but from the 900 metres he said the colt settled before asking for the supreme effort at the 500m mark.

"I knew then that he'd take a bit of catching and he was pretty awesome," Thompson said.

"He handled the soft track and he's going to be an exciting three-year-old."

Jamie Mott, rider of Doubt I'm Dreaming, was disappointed in the favourite's performance and suggested he may need a break.

"He was very fired up going to the barriers today whereas last start he was nice and relaxed," Mott said.

"I thought they went along nice enough and if he was to do what he did last start, he would have put them away.

"I'm sure with a break he'll be back bigger and stronger."
