Bat Out Of Hell for Hidden Pearl

Monday 1 May 2017, 5:24pm

Speedster Hidden Pearl will have a short, sharp winter carnival starting at the Gold Coast.

Trainer Barry Lockwood nominated Hidden Pearl for last Saturday's Victory Stakes but decided to wait another week for the Bat Out Of Hell (900m).

Hidden Pearl will have only a few starts this campaign aimed at getting black type to add to her value as a broodmare.

"She will probably resume in the Bat Out Of Hell at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Then there is a 1000 metre race a fortnight later. It will fit in nicely with her main aim the Queensland Lightning (on June 3)," Lockwood said.

"Hidden Pearl holds the 1000 metre records at both Eagle Farm and Doomben so the Lightning is an obvious race for her."

Hidden Pearl was one of 20 entries taken on Monday for the Bat Out Of Hell.

Lockwood said stablemate Tumbler did not appear to handle the shifty surface in Saturday's Victory Stakes in which she finished last of the six runners behind Music Magnate..

The trainer will now assess her career after monitoring how she comes through the run.

Lockwood has been successful since moving to Brisbane from NSW four years ago and has a good record with fillies and mares.

"Going right back to Shadea, who was a Group One horse and went on to be champion Lonhro's mum, I have had success with mares. Maybe, it is because I usually just leave them alone and let them get on with their own thing," he said.

Unplaced in the 1991 Golden Slipper, Shadea then ran second in the AJC Sires' Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes behind triple crown winner Tierce.
