Fresher Songs chasing a second Wangoom

Tuesday 2 May 2017, 12:37pm

The recent victory of Rhythm To Spare at Caulfield has given trainer Mike Moroney confidence ahead of the major sprint race at the Warrnambool three-day carnival.

Yesterday's Songs will be chasing back-to-back wins in Wednesday's Wangoom Handicap over 1200m.

Like he has done with Rhythm To Spare, Moroney has changed the training program of his stablemate.

"When I look back at what we've done with this horse and Rhythm To Spare, they've hardly had a spell," Moroney said.

"They've had little breaks, three-week breaks, so we thought we'd give them a both a good break after their last preparations.

"The owners were starting to get a bit funny but I said to them that the horses won't lose their ability to race and they'll come back.

"Rhythm To Spare has come back and I can't see why this one won't either."

At his second run from the spell, Rhythm To Spare won over 1600m at Caulfield on Saturday.

Yesterday's Songs won last year's Wangoom on a heavy track at the fifth run of his campaign before before being spelled after another five starts.

Moroney said after Yesterday's Songs didn't come up last preparation he was sent to pre-train at the beach at Balnarring.

"We gave him a long break and he had some time down at the beach," Moroney said.

"We had him down with Kevin Corstens doing some beach work while doing his pre-training.

"Last year he had a lot of feet troubles before he won but he's all over them now.

"He's come back terrific and I thought his first-up run was very good."

Yesterday's Songs finished eighth to Crystal Dreamer, beaten five lengths, over an unsuitable 1000m at Caulfield on April 8.

Among Yesterday's Song's opponents on Wednesday is last year's Wangoom runner-up Royal Island who won the 1200m sprint in 2015.

Yesterday's Song is a $15 chance to repeat his Wangoom success while Royal Island is at $13.

Jungle Edge, a dual Group One placegetter in Sydney during the autumn, is the $3 favourite under the steadier of 60kg.

At the corresponding meeting last year Jungle Edge was successful in a benchmark-70 race over 1000m.
