Bolwell to start rehab within a week

Tuesday 2 May 2017, 2:33pm

Apprentice jockey Melanie Bolwell is expected to begin rehabilitation within a week after being seriously injured in a three-horse fall in NSW last month.

Bolwell has been in hospital on the Gold Coast for almost a month following the April 8 fall at Warialda, in which fellow rider Darren Jones died and Leanne Henry was also injured.

The National Jockeys Trust said on Tuesday Bolwell would likely be moved to Sydney to begin her lengthy rehabilitation "within a week or so".

"Still a long road ahead", the NJT tweeted.

Bolwell was diagnosed with bleeding around the brain, and fractures in her neck and foot after the fall, in which Henry broke her collarbone.

Bolwell began talking to her family after her breathing tube was removed two weeks ago.
