Munce to keep stakes run going

Thursday 11 May 2017, 3:08pm

Trainer Chris Munce will rely on Ours To Keep to continue his run of stakes winning success after deciding to keep Saint Patricks Day for another day.

Ours To Keep can give Munce his 10th juvenile race win of the season in the Group Two Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Munce has already won four two-year-old stakes races this season with Ours To Keep (Phelan Ready Stakes and B J McLachlan Stakes), Champ Elect (Calaway Gal Stakes) and Saint Patricks Day (Dalrello Stakes).

"I like training two-year-olds as you can see them mature with the work you put into them," Munce said.

Saint Patricks Day, who won the Dalrello Stakes at his last start was nominated for the Champagne Classic.

Instead Munce will trial him on Tuesday and send him straight into the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) on May 27.

Ours To Keep ran fourth to Saint Patricks Day in the Dalrello Stakes at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

"He just struggled on the shifty track first-up. I think you will see a fitter horse on Saturday and would be shocked if he didn't run a good race," Munce said.

"The only thing is we want the rain to go away. On a good track he will give them something to catch from barrier four."

Big race jockey Damian Browne has stuck with Ours To Keep and also believes he will be a lot fitter.

"The barrier didn't help much either last start and it was a good run," Browne said.

Fellow trainer Kelso Wood is also hoping the rain clears by Saturday for Sniztkraft.

"He has done well since his first-up third on an unsuitable track and I am pleased with his work," Wood said.

He was all smiles at Ipswich on Wednesday when Criquette won her first race in nearly two years after being dogged by injury.

It was the second win in a week for new training partnership of Wood and his former foreman Patrica Gesler.
