Counterattack dressed for success

Friday 12 May 2017, 3:16pm

Chris Waller has turned to an equestrian discipline in a bid to help Counterattack add a Group One success to his record.

Sydney's premier trainer has incorporated dressage into the four-year-old's build-up to Saturday's Doomben 10,000, his sixth crack at a Group One.

"I've done a bit of dressage work with him just to change things around and it seems to have worked," Waller said.

"Counterattack hasn't won a Group One. Hopefully he'll get his chance in the next three races."

Waller also has the Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 27 and the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same venue on June 10 pencilled into Counterattack's schedule.

But he felt the $700,000 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) might be Counterattack's best opportunity after he drew barrier two with Opie Bosson in the saddle.

"He's got a soft draw, he's going to get the run of the race," Waller said.

Counterattack was at $13 on Friday with stablemate, 2015 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Japonisme, a $17 chance with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Russian Revolution the $3.20 favourite.
