Hulberts have two chances in Champagne

It isn't often trainers have two thirds of their two-year-old team in a stakes race.

But that is the situation for Peter and Will Hulbert when they tackle the Group Two Champagne Classic with Cooroi Chase and Showashadow.

The Hulberts believe they have a real chance to get black type with the fillies who with gelding Excelebrazione make up their juvenile team.

Cooroi Chase won a Deagon trial by 16 lengths last month and has since won and run second at Doomben in strong races.

Showashadow was earmarked as one of Brisbane's better youngsters when she came from well back to win at Eagle Farm in February.

Peter Hulbert said both fillies had worked well in the lead-up to Saturday's race.

"We are only a small stable and to have two runners in the one Group Two race is a bit of an achievement," Hulbert said.

"They are both lovely fillies who will be better over longer trips. But I expect them to be finishing their races off well.

"Both were bred by their owners so it is also good to take on the big stables who spend a fortune on their young horses."

Hulbert said Cooroi Chase had race fitness on her side but Showashadow came to hand quickly.

"Michael (Hellyer) probably was forced to go earlier than we would have liked when she was second at Doomben. It left her a sitting shot for the eventual winner," he said.

Hellyer will again ride Cooroi Chase while Hulbert has been able to get multiple Group One-winning New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson for Showashadow.

Hulbert hopes both fillies can progress to the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes and J J Atkins Stakes in the next month.
