Dartmouth wins Yorkshire Cup for The Queen

Saturday 20 May 2017, 9:08am

Ryan Moore has had to work hard to get Dartmouth home in the Yorkshire Cup for The Queen at York.

Winner of the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last June, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained five-year-old will now attempt a repeat victory in the Group Two race over a mile-and-a-half at Royal Ascot next month.

For the first two days the place to be at York was the far side of the track, but after overnight rain turned the ground dead, Moore was keen to grab the rail on the stands side.

It proved inspired, as there were challengers spread right across the track with Dartmouth grabbing victory by a neck from Simple Verse.

The Queen's racing advisor John Warren praised Moore's ride.

"I didn't think he was going to get there because they were so wide apart," Warren said.

"It was hard to see from the stands whether he was going to get up. It was a remarkable ride, he's an absolute professional."

Dartmouth was touted as a Melbourne Cup contender last year but did not make the trip to Australia.
