Overstep back in form at Flemington

Saturday 20 May 2017, 1:27pm

Overstep has turned the tables on short-priced favourite Divine Quality in an impressive win at Flemington.

The Chris Waller-trained Overstep enjoyed the weight relief in taking out the Light Fingers Hall of Fame Trophy (1200m) on Saturday.

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Overstep ($10) scored a three-quarter length win from Motown Lil ($5.50) with the easing $2.30 favourite Divine Quality a length away third.

Overstep carried 59kg when fourth behind Divine Quality in a similar class race at Flemington a fortnight ago and Newitt said the weight drop to 56.5kg on Saturday was welcome relief.

"That's what we thought she'd do last start but she drew (barrier) one and she's the type of horse that has no in between," Newitt said.

"She's either flat out or out the back.

"Today she drew a gate where she was able to get a smother straight away.

"She travelled well and never felt in any danger."

Waller's Melbourne representative Johanne Taylor said options remain open for the filly, who could step up to 1400m now she's settling better.

"Chris will have a look at the program and see if there's anything in Sydney or Brisbane," Taylor said.

"We could go up to 1400 metres with her now and she goes around a bend really well so it opens up a lot of opportunities.

"Chris will place her where she's most competitive."

Robbie Griffiths, trainer of the favourite Divine Quality, said the filly would now be spelled and brought back for races during the summer and next autumn.
