Trainer Brad Smith to plead his case

Sunday 11 June 2017, 10:49am

Brisbane trainer Brad Smith is hoping to quickly finalise a stewards' inquiry after being stood down for failing to appear at an earlier hearing.

Smith has not trained for the past two weeks after stewards suspended him for failing to attend an inquiry.

The trainer had told stewards he was too ill to attend.

He went to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal to appeal the suspension on Friday.

"QCAT lifted the suspension and instructed that a new panel hear my case. I hope to resolve the issues as soon as possible," Smith said.

"This has ruined my business and my health. I won't be training for a while anyway. But I want to clear my name."

Stewards will also open an inquiry into why Victorian jockey Patrick Moloney left Doomben on Saturday without being cleared.

Moloney was needed to give evidence in an inquiry into interference suffered by his mount Kaepernick in the Stradbroke Handicap.

New Zealand jockey Leith Innes, who rode Counterattack, was charged with causing the interference but asked for an adjournment so he could hear Moloney's evidence.

"I think he was going in as I was coming out. I want to at least hear what he has to say," Innes said.

As Innes returns to New Zealand on Monday the inquiry will be held via teleconference.
