Fournette goes two-from-two

Wednesday 14 June 2017, 4:54pm

Fournette has shown her fighting qualities at Canterbury to add a city win to her recent provincial maiden success.

The three-year-old was in the middle of the pack at the halfway point of Wednesday's 1550m-race but surged down the straight to pip Hittite ($14) by a short half-head.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy admitted he was a little worried at the 500m mark after Fournette ($9) was slow out of the gate.

"But at the top of the lane she got another wind and away she went. It was a pretty brave win," McEvoy said.

Favourite Walk the Streets ($3) finished third by a short head.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Fournette broke her maiden over 1500m at Kembla Grange in late May.

McEvoy said there was added merit to the win because he didn't think she was at home on the heavy track.

"Gerald and his team have done well because there was a bit of a break between runs," he said.

"She didn't love the ground I don't think.

"There's plenty of merit in the win. She's a nice big filly and probably only going to improve."

Fournette was one of three winners for McEvoy at Canterbury along with Star Galaxy and Life O'Brien.
