Apprentice Nick Heywood has made amends aboard Yuma Desert at Randwick, with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare leading all the way to deny Test The World a fifth straight win.
Yuma Desert ran fourth as the equal favourite in a similar 1400m benchmark race when she also led but had little left for the finish after going too hard mid-race.
Heywood, who is indentured to the Snowden team, judged the pace perfectly on Saturday to get the $5 chance home two lengths in front of Test The World.
"Nick learned a lot from the other day," Paul Snowden said.
"She did too much work the other day but he rated her perfectly today.
"His claim is down to two kilos now, which is still an advantage.
"It's taken until now for us to get her to 1400 metres but we've always been confident she would get it and now she's shown that."
After Heywood's claim, Yuma Desert carried 55.5kg, which was a telling factor as $3.10 favourite Test The World lumped her full 59.5kg with Tye Angland aboard.
Test The World tracked Yuma Desert throughout the race but made little impression in the final 200m under the big weight.
Reiby Rampart ($6) made ground from the back of the field to finish a head behind the runner-up.
The win was Yuma Desert's first since June 2016.
