Last-stride win to Curdled at Doomben

Saturday 24 June 2017, 2:38pm

Curdled has broken through for his first win at Doomben but jockey Jim Byrne believes the best is yet to come.

Curdled was well backed from $8.50 into $6 before overhauling Marseille En Fleur ($14) to win by a short half-head in the Listed Winning Edge Stakes (1350m) on Saturday.

Byrne said Curdled still had plenty to learn.

"He doesn't know how to attack the line yet," Byrne said.

"I wouldn't say he dug the toes in but in the last 50 metres he more or less just wanted to observe the other horses.

"He wasn't really attacking the line the way he should but he'll learn from it and should make a nice horse when he understands what racing is all about."

Bill Mitchell, representing trainer Peter Robl, said Curdled would be spelled following Saturday's win.

"He's a progressive horse who should develop into a better three-year-old than two-year-old and we'll put him away and look for the right races next season," Mitchell said.

Jockey Jimmy Orman praised the courage of With A Promise after her hard-fought win in the Three-Year-Old Plate (1350m).

"She's got a lot of fight in her, that's for sure, and it's a big effort for her to back up after Ipswich last week and win again," Orman said.

With A Promise ($4.80) continued the purple patch of form for trainer Ben Currie when she scored by half a length from I'm A Rippa ($8.50), with Ringo's A Rockstar ($5.50) 2-1/4 lengths away in third.
