Generators save big Cairns meeting

Saturday 2 September 2017, 3:10pm

Racing Queensland was able to access some emergency generators to help the Cairns Amateurs Cup meeting go ahead after a massive power failure.

The meeting was held up when a transformer exploded at about 1pm crippling the meeting.

Races were suspended while Cairns club officials and Racing Queensland staff frantically tracked down some generators.

RQ's general manager Simon Stout said the meeting was able to resume after 100 minutes.

"We were lucky that we could get the generators and able to reschedule the meeting," Stout said.

The Cairns Amateurs meeting is one of the biggest in country Australia with 12,000 to 15,000 people on course.
