Torgersen to regain will to win at Coast

Friday 6 October 2017, 1:51pm

Former Sydney stakes performer Torgersen has worked well enough to end a two-year winning drought but his stable remains worried about his will to win.

Torgersen will be having his second Queensland start in the Open Handicap (1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

As a younger horse Torgersen was placed in the Tulloch Stakes, Packer Plate and Bill Ritchie.

Toregersen was considered good enough to run in last year's Group One Epsom Handicap in which he finished eighth, 2-1/2 lengths behind Hauraki.

But he has not won since he beat a handy field at Randwick in December 2015.

Trainer Chris Waller sent Torgersen north to his new Gold Coast stable hoping a change of scenery would help him refocus on racing.

Torgersen finished fourth at his first Queensland race in a Class Three Plate three weeks ago.

Waller's Gold Coast stable manager Paul Shailer said it had been a fair run but it could have been expected Torgersen would have done better.

"It was a Class Three and he was a full 15 points higher rated than his nearest rival in that race. He should have nearly won that," Shailer said.

"There is nothing wrong with him. He has done well since he got here. He has worked well and he looks well."

"He also has a top jockey (Robbie Fradd) and a perfect barrier (1), so it is all up to him now."
