Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig have added their names to their family's rich history in the Caulfield Cup after the upset win of Boom Time.

Both Hayes and Dabernig are grandsons of the late Colin Hayes, an Australian hall of fame trainer who won the 1976 Cup with How Now.

Ben Hayes and Dabernig now train in partnership with David Hayes, himself a hall of fame trainer who enjoyed success in the Cup in 1993 with Fraar and again with Tawqeet in 2006.

He has added a third, this time in partnership with his son Ben and his nephew Tom.

"I'm a third generation Hayes now to win a Caulfield Cup. It's super exciting," Ben Hayes said.

"It was amazing. We thought he had a chance but didn't think he would be able to win it.

"I was actually watching him. I thought he was travelling the best coming into the corner.

"It's just so exciting, I can't explain it. The adrenaline, I was feeling sick before the race."

Hayes said the win was extra special, not just for himself but all those involved.

"It's Tom's first Caulfield Cup. It's my first and it's (jockey) Cory Parish's first.

"Tom and I can now say we're Caulfield Cup-winning trainers."

Dabernig said the team had had really good luck at Caulfield and it continued on Saturday with Boom Time, who he said was "a bit of an underdog".

The stable had four runners in the Cup with the others unplaced.

"It's an amazing feeling and a great thing to be a part of," Dabernig said.

"David did the toast to the Caulfield Cup yesterday and looked back at the family history. The How Nows and the Fraars and the Tawqeets.

"And then from our point of view, Ben and mine, you love to be a part of it, so it's great that we've been able to do that. They're hard to come by."
