Patience pay more dividends for Schmidt

Wednesday 1 November 2017, 4:47pm

Trainer Dwayne Schmidt's patience with horses who have leg problems was again rewarded with seven-year-old Time To Rock at Ipswich.

His daughter Cassie Schmidt rode a clever front-running race to win on the favourite Time To Rock ($3) in the ITC Melbourne Cup Luncheon Maiden (2150m).

Schmidt trained with success in Brisbane for several years while his daughters Cassie and Priscilla were apprenticed in the area.

But he returned to train at Grafton several years ago and again has had plenty of success, especially with problem horses.

Time To Rock, who was placed as Moonee Valley before coming north two years ago, is well bred being by top sire Fastnet Rock but was having his 19th start.

"Every time I got him right he would injure a tendon. That is why he was a seven-year-old maiden," Schmidt said.

"He had run seconds at his past three starts in the northern rivers but he is a winner now and will win another race probably in the northern rivers.

"Although for some reason I have a bit of luck at Ipswich."

The northern rivers form also held up when Malmoosa ($6.50) the Grandview Stud Handicap for Lismore trainer Dan Bowen.

"Malmoosa originally raced with the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig camp but she has been very good since we got her at a dispersal sale," Bowen sad.

"We will look at coming back for a Saturday race," Bowen said.

Apprentice Ruby Ride rode a winner at her first ride for top trainer Rob Heathcote on Jomar's Element ($5).
