Last year's Emirates Melbourne Cup fourth-placegetter Qewy won't be contesting the race this year, granting international galloper Wall of Fire a guaranteed passage into Tuesday's $6.2million feature.
Trainer Chris Appleby confirmed overnight that Wednesday's Bendigo Cup winner will need more time to recover from his hard-fought win over Kiwia, and that he won't back-up at Flemington.
"He knows he's had a race, and I think the Cup will just come a bit soon for him," Appleby said, via the Godolphin website.
"It's only six days between the two races.
"Hopefully we can consider another race for him in Melbourne this trip, provided he is back on top form."
Qewy's withdrawal sees Wall of Fire move to 23rd on the order of entry, meaning even if the Lexus Stakes winner climbs above him in the ballot, he is assured his place in the race.
That would be pleasing news for trainer Hugo Palmer and jockey Craig Williams.
That leaves Abbey Marie on the fringe at 24th in the order, but susceptible to being bumped by the Lexus winner - meaning Mick Kent and connections are cheering for either an Ecuador/Havana Cooler win in the Lexus, or hoping for another withdrawal from above them in the order.
Thomas Hobson is now 25th in the order, still requiring some movement above him to get him into the race for Willie Mullins and Joao Moreira.
