Deep Impact's Tosen Stardom to Stand at Woodside Park in 2018

Monday 8 January 2018, 3:11pm

Woodside Park Stud is thrilled to announce that they will be standing dual Australian Group 1 winner, Tosen Stardom (JPN) at stud in the spring of 2018.

Securing a son of Japan's Champion sire, Deep Impact, Tosen Stardom is a massive coup for Australian breeders.

As a loyal advocate of the Victorian breeding industry, Woodside Park Stud's principal, Mark Rowsthorn is proud to provide mare owners with the opportunity to tap into these renowned bloodlines.

"Tosen Stardom's pedigree is extremely well regarded internationally through his sire, Deep Impact and in his strong female line. We are delighted to develop an association with his Japanese owners, Northern Farm's Mr Yoshida & Mr Shimakawa, and are excited to offer this fantastic opportunity to Australian breeders and in particular, to those in Victoria," Rowsthorn said.

Experienced syndicators, Australian Bloodstock, purchased a significant stake in Tosen Stardom on his second visit to Australia and transferred the promising stallion to leading trainer Darren Weir.

Darren was convinced of the horse's ability after he broke free in the straight to win his first Group 1 in the Toorak Handicap.

"Tosen Stardom has everything it takes to be one of the great stallions in this country, he's got the pedigree, the ability and now he's got the group 1," Weir said.

In the Emirates, he emphatically stamped his superiority, showing his true colours with a late explosive surge and freakish turn of foot to claim victory despite being hampered by heavy traffic.

"It was amazing, wasn't it? That was the real Tosen Stardom today, that's the ability we knew he had," Weir said post-race.

In addition to his Group 1 wins he also flashed talent with a commendable second in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes to Black Heart Bart, and close third behind Vega Magic in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes.

Once he secured his second Australian Group 1 win, and boosted his earnings to $3,347,526 million, Tosen Stardom cemented his exciting future at stud.

"Woodside Park Stud is the premier stud in Victoria, and through Written Tycoon and Zoustar, we have broken the myth and proved that you can stand a top line-up of stallions down south," Rowsthorn said.

"I believe that Victorian breeders have demonstrated that they will support the local studs if we provide the right product, and Tosen Stardom will beautifully complement our existing draft of stallions to offer a diverse spread of sire lines."

"Tosen Stardom is seen as a Victorian horse, a Weir horse. He is a middle-distance star, with an incredible turn of foot. He was avery successful undefeated, stakes winning two-year-old.He will suit the owners and breeders that strive for immediate success," Rowsthorn said.

Carrying the famous blue, black and white checks of the Australian Bloodstock silks, Tosen Stardom was a clever acquisition by Managing Director Jamie Lovett.

"We have long held the view that Tosen Stardom was potentially the best International horse to race in the Southern Hemisphere, and our brief to our Japanese partners was to secure his future at Stud. With his Group 1 wins he has now delivered in spades on that potential."

"Having achieved his greatest successes on Melbourne tracks, the local breeders will remember his brilliance. He was a superior galloper that consistently performed at the top level, and franked his form by the horses he beat home each start. There are not many Deep Impact stallions with that speed profile." Lovett said.

Lovett, speaking on behalf of Tosen Stardom's Japanese owners, saw how honoured they were after his Emirates victory.

They were very pleased with the Group 1 mile race but after his 2000m WFA Emirates win Mr.Yoshida made comment that : 'he is a Stallion now'.

"After speaking with many breeders, and acting on behalf of the Japanese owners, it was clear that Woodside Park Stud has forged a great reputation and will work proactively to ensure that he has the best book of mares possible to be successful at stud," Lovett said.

With only three Deep Impact sire sons available to breeders outside of Japan, Tosen Stardom brings unique value to Victorian mares, providing an international outcross free from Danzig bloodlines.

Tosen Stardom became the Japanese-based super sire's 31st Group 1 winner and his only dual Australian Group 1 winner.

Bred and still part owned by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Racing, Deep Impact is a breed shaper. He was Japanese Horse of the Year in 2006, and since entering stud in 2007 he has won a staggering nine Japanese stallion premiership crowns, four General Sire titles and five Champion Two-Year-Old Sire awards.

Tosen Stardom will race over the autumn for Darren Weir before beginning his new career at Woodside Park Stud. Darren is looking forward to seeing what he can do this campaign which may include runs in the Orr, the Futurity, the Australian Cup and back to Sydney for the Queen Elizabeth.

"Tosen Stardom is right up there with the best horses I have trained and I was rapt to see him showcase just how good he is during the 2017 Spring carnival. Trained accordingly, his natural ability would see him competitive at the highest level over a range of distances, such is his versatility."

(Tosen Stardom)

"He has always been an exciting horse to train and I will be supporting him at stud by sending mares to him and recommending my clients to do the same." Weir said.

With this enviable stallion acquisition, Woodside Park Stud presents undoubtedly Victoria's most diverse, proven and best-performed stallion roster, that can indeed hold its own with any stud in Australia.

Tosen Stardom will compliment Victoria's Champion Sire, Written Tycoon, Northern Meteor's heir, Zoustar, Invincible Spirit's highest rated two-year-old, Cable Bay and Written Tycoon's fastest son at stud, Rich Enuff.
