Waller to join NZ Racing Hall of Fame

Monday 8 January 2018, 6:07pm

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller is to be honoured in his homeland with induction to the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame.

The winner of the past seven Sydney titles and Australia's leading Group One winning trainer for the past few seasons, Waller moved from New Zealand in 2000.

He is also the trainer of Australia's best horse Winx, winner of the past three Cox Plates.

Waller will be joined in the Hall of Fame on February 9 by veteran NZ trainer Murray Baker who is the premier trainer along with partner Andrew Forsman.

Baker has won 21 Australian Group One races, a record for a New Zealand-based trainer with his wins including last season's Australian Derby with Jon Snow and Australian Oaks with Bonneval.

Jockey Noel Harris, who rode 2163 races during his 45-year career, is also among the inductees.

Might And Power, winner of the 1997 Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double, is among the horses to be honoured.

A son of the champion sire Zabeel and the winner of seven Group One races including the 1998 Cox Plate, Might And Power was trained in Sydney by the late Jack Denham for Nick Moraitis.

Four-time champion New Zealand sire O'Reilly will also be inducted along with Veandercross and champion jumper Brookby Song.
