A car accident was the catalyst for veteran racecaller Paul Dolan to announce his retirement.

Dolan hasm plied his trade in thoroughbred racing and greyhound racing at 104 different tracks in seven countries.

He is best known Australia wide as RadioTAB's main greyhound caller but also as the voice of Sunday horse racing at the Gold Coast.

He is highly regarded for his willingness to travel to call at country meetings.

It is estimated Dolan has called more than 70,000 gallops and greyhound races since his first at country Gayndah in 1973.

"I am not big-noting when I say I have been a caller at 104 tracks. Someone asked me recently so I sat down and rallied them up I was amazed," he said.

Dolan said he had always made it clear he would make no long term plans for retirement but would one day just know it was time

"I live in a semi-rural area and was driving home from Albion Park dogs at about 11.30am, recently," he said.

"I must have had a mini nap as the car ran off the road down a dip and luckily the bumps woke me up and I was able to avoid any damage.

"But I thought that was it and it was time for someone younger."

Dolan will call his last greyhound race on September 20 and his last TAB race meeting at Toowoomba on September 23.
