Crack Me Up Queensland Horse of the Year

Sunday 16 September 2018, 10:29pm

Consistent gelding Crack Me Up has been named Queensland's Horse of the Year for the 2017/18 racing season.

In a close vote, Crack Me Up became one of the few horses to win the title without having won a Group One race.

However, there are few more consistent horses than the Liam Birchley-trained Crack Me Up who won the Group Two The Villiers at Randwick, the Group Three Liverpool City Cup at Randwick and the Listed Recognition Handicap at Doomben during the season.

The winner of more than $700,000 prize money, Crack Me Up began his Melbourne spring campaign on Saturday when sixth in the Bobbie Lewis at Flemington.

He joins greats such as Buffering, Strawberry Road, Dalrello, Charlton Boy, Show A Heart and Falvelon to win the award.

At a function in Brisbane on Sunday night, metropolitan premiership winners Tony Gollan (trainer), Jeff Lloyd (jockey) and Jag Guthmann-Chester (apprentice) were all also voted the top of their respective categories.

Other awards included Queensland's provincial and overall premier trainer Ben Currie, Provincial premier jockey Justin Stanley, Country trainer Bevan Johnson and country jockey Dan Ballard.
