Rain puts paid to Doomben midweek meeting

Tuesday 16 October 2018, 1:47pm

Racing officials are hoping for a break in the weather to allow Saturday's meetings to proceed after Wednesday's Doomben meeting became seventh to be abandoned in a week.

In the past week meetings have been lost at Doomben, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Warwick, Toowoomba and Gayndah.

Toowoomba was able to race on a soft track on Monday but trainers and owners have been desperate for more meetings.

It had been hoped Doomben could go ahead on Wednesday but continued rain in Brisbane on Tuesday made it was inevitable decision to abandon the meeting.

Doomben track manager Jim Roberts walked the racecourse with stewards on Tuesday morning and said most of the track was soaked.

Doomben has had nearly 150mm of rain up to midday on Tuesday and 100mm since Saturday's race meeting was abandoned.

Roberts said if the rain eased as predicted the track should dry quickly and racing could be possible on Saturday.

"But as always we are in the lap of the weather," he said.
