Group One target for The Bostonian

Sunday 11 November 2018, 6:20pm

New Zealand trainer Tony Pike has Group One ambitions for Bostonian who has returned from a spell after a successful Queensland campaign.

The gelding raced as The Bostonian in Australia where he started three times for three wins culminating in the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Bostonian won a barrier trial at Cambridge on Thursday and Pike has New Zealand's premier sprint, The Railway (1200m) in mind.

"He's come back nicely after his break and I was pleased to see how he did things in his trial," Pike told NZ Racing Desk.

"Vinnie (Colgan) never had him off the bridle and he was strong to the line, so it was a satisfying work-out.

"He's never been that big, but he has filled out nicely over the winter, so we're excited about his prospects for the summer.

"As long as he does things right over the next few days, I think we might kick him off in the Counties Bowl at Pukekohe in a fortnight.

"If he goes well there then the Railway at Ellerslie on New Year's day is definitely an option.".
