Stud newcomer figures in Doomben double

Saturday 15 December 2018, 4:32pm

Rockhampton filly Better Reflection continued the dream start to former top sprinter Better Than Ready's stud career when she overcame difficulties to win the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.

Better Reflection ($6) assured herself of a start in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic next month when she beat Boomstress ($10) by 1-1/2 lengths.

The favourite Single Blonde ($3) was third a short neck back.

The win gave Better Than Ready the feature two-year-old double after The Odyssey won the Phelan Ready Stakes 40 minutes earlier.

Better Than Ready, who stands at Lyndhurst Stud, has had a brilliant start to his stud career with six individual winners.

Better Reflection cost Rockhampton trainer John Wiggington $20,000 at the Magic Millions March Sales and she has already returned more than $100,000.

Wiggington said Better Reflection was unlikely to run again before the Millions day on January 12.

"I don't want to overtax her. She had to do it tough today as she was trapped wide for the entire race from her bad barrier but she has run faster time than the colts," he said.

"We knew we had something smart when she won a trial and then she won the Breeders in Rockhampton by a big margin and we were confident we could take on city class," he said.

Rockhampton jockey Nigel Seymour made a rare Brisbane appearance to win on Better Reflection.

"It was a good tough win," Seymour said.

Likewise Luke Tarrant, who rode Boomstress said the filly had fought on well after being attacked in the lead.
