Tommy Berry finds winning key to Savatiano

Saturday 25 May 2019, 1:24pm

Godolphin Australia's head trainer James Cummings was quick to praise jockey Tommy Berry after Savatiano took advantage of the "perfect storm" to score her second stakes win at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Savatinao ($3.30) was able to sit behind the leader and favourite Quilista before coming away to win by 2-3/4 lengths in the Group Three Grinders Coffee Roasters Stakes (1300m).

Eckstein ($9) ran on in what will probably be her last race to finish third.

Savatinao hadn't won since the Mona Lisa at Wyong in August but had showed a return to form with a second in the Dark Jewel Stakes at Scone at her previous start.

Cummings said it was a credit to Berry that Savatiano could return to the winner's list.

"It was a perfect storm with the leader wanting to go a bit hard and we could sit on her," Cummings said.

"But Tom has been riding very well in Sydney and he carried that form over here.

"But I have tried a few different riders on Savatiano since her last win but Tom has the key to her."

Cummings said he was inclined to give Savatiano a few more runs in the winter.

"She is fit and I reckon she can win a third stakes race now," he said.

Savatiano was one of the few mares in the race who isn't for sale in next week's Magic Millions National sales.

Quilista and Eckstein are both listed for sale.
