Mother-daughter team get Flemington double

Saturday 22 June 2019, 4:13pm

Long-shot wins to Pop Queen and Come On Carl have made it a day to remember for mother and daughter training partners Lyn Tolson and Leonie Proctor at Flemington.

Four-year-old gelding Come On Carl's victory by a head in Saturday's $125,000 David Bourke Provincial Plate (1600m) brought up the double for the stable after Pop Queen raced to a 3-1/4 length victory in the Murray Region Handicap (1400m) for mares.

The two horses were sent out as $31 chances in their respective races.

Proctor said she had not been expecting to land their first Flemington double after Pop Queen's success earlier in the day but was thrilled it happened.

"It's pretty exciting," she said.

"I was expecting them to both run well. They've come on a lot since their last runs, so we were pretty happy with them."

The Mornington-based trainers keep about 15 horses in work and also had Well Sprung finish midfield in the Country Achiever Austy Coffey Handicap on Saturday.

"It is a big thrill, definitely," Tolson said of the winning double.

"We don't often have a few runners at Flemington.

"Come On Carl's last run at Mornington was on a heavy track and we probably had him a bit underdone, so we knew he would improve.

"He's been a work in progress. You come thinking you're in with a chance and if we came second or third we would have been thrilled to pieces too."

Tolson said they brought Pop Queen to town in the hope there would be good pace on in Saturday's race and give her a chance to get clear running in the long Flemington straight.

"But we didn't expect her to win by three lengths. That we didn't expect," she said.
