Flit could bypass Eagle for interstate G1

Saturday 10 October 2020, 5:27pm

Bonny mare Flit has given Godolphin food for thought after returning to the winner's circle in the $500,000 Silver Eagle at Randwick.

The 1300m race is timed as a lead up to the $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick in three weeks but trainer James Cummings has stopped short of committing her to a start.

While the race is among Flit's spring options, a trip to Melbourne for the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on the same day is also being considered.

"She has been flying this preparation without winning," Cummings said.

"We just couldn't see her running a bad race today and yet she was up against some pretty good opposition.

"She has marched herself right into contention for a couple of big targets over the next three weeks and it will be up to the boys which way they want to head with her."

Ridden by Rachel King, Flit ($10) made her run with $2.50 favourite Alligator Blood and packed too many punches for the Queenslander.

She prevailed by a long neck over the David Vandyke-trained gelding with Dawn Passage ($4.20) making late ground to finish another 1-1/4 lengths away.

Ryan Maloney said there were no excuses for Alligator Blood.

"Had a nice run. The winner was too good," Maloney said.
