History of Hotham Stakes winners in Cup

Saturday 31 October 2020, 2:37pm

The last horse to complete the Hotham Stakes-Melbourne Cup double was Shocking in 2009. Brew in 2000 is the only other Hotham winner to claim the Cup in the past three decades.

Until 2005, both first and second placegetters in the race were guaranteed a Cup start but since then only the winner automatically makes the field.

Ashrun, trained by Andreas Wohler, won the 2020 Hotham Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday and is expected to take his place in the Melbourne Cup.
