Lightning causes Bendigo to be called off

Wednesday 11 November 2020, 4:03pm

The midweek meeting at Bendigo has been abandoned after two races due to an electrical storm.

Racing Victoria's presiding chief steward at Bendigo, Rob Montgomery, delayed the running of the third race for 40 minutes but in the finish he had to call the meeting off due to lightning activity surrounding the racecourse.

He said the program had been abandoned under Racing Victoria's extreme weather policy.

"We had to delay for as long as we have as if there's a lightning strike on-course we can't race for 30 minutes," Montgomery said.

"Lightning strikes are still happening all over the place and we've been in touch with the Bureau of Meteorology and they said there's another electrical front coming and there's a possibility the two fronts might merge."

The first two races were won by the Levi Kavanagh-trained Nantucket and Symon Wilde's impressive debut winner Sirileo Miss.
