Freedman on the Highway from Scone

Friday 1 January 2021, 9:28am

Scone trainer Will Freedman has been training in his own right for almost six months and he loves nothing more than to come to town to tackle the Highway series.

At Kensington on Saturday, he will saddle up Chewie Two in the Highway Handicap and believes

his gelding has a strong winning chance, although he is wary of the favourite, Mother's Mercy.

The Uncle Mo progeny is having his fourth start for Freedman, after being formerly trained by the training team of his father and uncle Richard and Michael Freedman.

Chewie Two was only a length off Mother's Mercy in a recent Scone Benchmark 58 race, but

Freedman admits his charge had a better run in transit.

"He's going really well actually, mind you the favourite had a bit of a tougher run at Scone,"

Freedman said.

"She sat four wide and we had it easy enough up front.

"But I think there's certainly some improvement in him and he'll run a very honest race."

The four-year-old gelding is a brother to Chewbacca and Freedman said he had thrived since switching to the country stable.

"He is very easy to train," Freedman said.

"He's probably one of the soundest horses in the barn, he always tries his heart out.

"I'll be surprised if he's not figuring in the first few."

Freedman recently followed in his father's footsteps by dabbling in presentation work

for Channel 7 over the Sydney Spring carnival, but is not about to swap the binoculars for a

microphone any time soon.

"It's good exposure, it keeps your profile up," Freedman said.

"But it's only something I'm doing cameos for, obviously my first priority is training winners.

"I've still got a long way to go but it's fun going to those good race meetings and having

something to do with those quality horses."
