Gold Coast trainer Kelly Doughty had to look twice when she saw the barrier draws for her two runners, Morning Captain and Black Cash, at Doomben on Saturday.
Morning Captain drew barrier one in the Nairn Construction Handicap (1200m) while Black Cash landed the identical alley in the Bartons Bayside Handicap (1350m).
"Morning Captain usually gets the outside every time we put him in a race so it was a surprise to everyone when he came up with barrier one," Doughty said.
The gelding is resuming on Saturday after a luckless campaign during the late autumn and winter when the closest he drew to the fence was barrier nine out of 14 runners in the Glasshouse Handicap on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast in June.
"His runs last time in were enormous because he had no luck whatsoever," Doughty said.
"They weren't just middle of the field barriers he was continually drawing, he was starting from right near the outside as well as striking really wet tracks."
The five-year-old ran a close second in a 900m barrier trial at the Gold Coast on Tuesday to top him off for Saturday's assignment.
Black Cash is on target for a trip to Melbourne if he races well on Saturday.
Doughty will target a 1500m race at the night meeting at Moonee Valley on October 25 for Black Cash before a 1400m event at Flemington on November 7.
Both races are restricted to grey horses.
Black Cash has made a remarkable comeback to racing after overcoming a life-threatening case of cellulitis.
"He was in the clinic for a long time and we didn't think he'd survive ... it was touch and go," Doughty said.
"The only thing that kept him going, even though he was sick as, was that he kept eating.
"Being able to keep that bit of weight on him enabled him to stay strong enough to pull through."
Black Cash will be ridden by Michael Cahill while Jim Byrne has been booked for Morning Captain.
