The spotlight is on Triple Crown’s Charlie Boy this Saturday as he takes his place in the 14 horse field of the $1m Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas. The feature 1600m race for 3YO’s is the last on the card at Caulfield tomorrow posting at 5:45pm AEDT.

Gerald Ryan is thrilled with the 3yo colt’s progress and is getting quite bullish about his chances.

“It’s a good even race with quite a few chances in it, but if we get the race run to suit, get clear at the required time Charlie will run super” commented Ryan.

“I am really looking forward to the race…he has real live chance in the Group 1”

Charlie Boy has had a promising lead up into the feature which has included a commanding Group 2 Danehill Stakes win and a great run for 5th place in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. Scobie Breasley Medal winner Michael Rodd has partnered the horse in both runs and takes the reins once again tomorrow.

“Michael Rodd has a great affinity with the colt and has done a fantastic job getting the best out of him in his last two starts” said Triple Crown Director Michael Ward.

Ryan couldn’t be happier with the son of Myboycharlie ahead of the Group 1 on Saturday, “he looks fantastic and has worked on very well from his previous start, hasn’t left an oat, and hasn’t missed a beat”.

Charlie Boy fared well in the official barrier draw claiming gate 3 which should place him ideally to get a nice run behind the speed. However, victory in the blue riband, set weight assignment certainly won’t be an easy task with numerous high class 3YOs amongst the field. Caulfield Guineas Prelude winner Eclair Big Bang has drawn just outside Charlie Boy in barrier 4 and impressive Tony Vasil trained Prince Harada jumps from barrier 12 racing on his home track.

The Caulfield Guineas is a race that sorts the men from the boys and is highly regarded as a stallion making race. All Too Hard overcame short priced favourite, Pierro, last year with both horses now standing their first season at stud. The 1999 edition of the race saw not only the winner Redoute’s Choice, sent to stud but place getters Testa Rossa and Commands, as well as additional runners Pins, Diatribe, Align and Dangerous. Other notable stallions to have succeeded in the Caulfield Guineas include the likes of Starspangledbanner, Lonhro, Helmet and many more.

Interestingly, Charlie Boy is the only contender in this year’s Guineas to go through the sale ring for less than $210,000 as a yearling. The son of Falbrav mare Maritime, Charlie Boy was an $80,000 purchase for Chris and Michael Ward from the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Triple Crown’s philosophy of selecting quality individuals for reasonable prices has undeniably paid dividends for their team of owners, many of whom are first time racehorse owners, and they are enjoying the ride of their life with this colt.
