Frenchman Thomas Huet's love affair with Australia has hit a snag with the jockey put on notice he needs to be more competitive.
Stewards expressed their concern over Huet's ride on the Gai Waterhouse-trained Queenstown, runner-up in Saturday's Group Three Angst Stakes after she was posted wide throughout.
Huet is based with Waterhouse and had his biggest Australian win on Under The Sun for the stable in the Listed Winter Stakes in July.
He joined Waterhouse with a view to settling in Australia permanently.
But his riding style has caused Racing NSW stewards to warn him he will be sent to the Riding Skills Panel for remedial training if he doesn't improve and his suitability to ride in the metropolitan area will be reassessed.
Stewards asked Huet why he raced three-wide without cover instead of taking up a position that was available one-out.
Huet said he did not believe the option was there for him but stewards disagreed, telling him he was on thin ice as far as city racing was concerned.
