Nothing could come close to Guelph as Darley's pin-up girl on Wednesday but the all-conquering stable unearthed a more than able support act at Warwick Farm.
While Guelph was the focus of national racing attention as the winning Thousand Guineas favourite, her lesser-known stablemate Moderate confirmed herself as a three-year-old filly of some promise with a dashing Sydney victory.
Sitting last in the Australian Turf Club Handicap, Moderate, the $2 favourite, caught even her jockey Christian Reith off guard with her 2-1/4 length win over Phaedra.
"She improved that quickly when I asked her to go that she surprised me with how fast she went," Reith said.
Assistant trainer Brad Widdup envisages the filly will have done enough to convince head trainer Peter Snowden she should join Darley's spring carnival team in Melbourne.
"I think Peter will have a good look at that win," Widdup said.
"She could go to Melbourne now because there's a couple of nice (Listed) fillies races.
"How she is winning shows she's come back very well so I wouldn't be surprised if Peter thinks about sending her down."
Reith, who teamed up with Darley to win the Spring Champion Stakes on Complacent last Saturday, was also in the saddle when the international stable brought up an early Warwick Farm double.
Staying-bred Gallatin overcame inexperience to post his first win in the Champion Sire Casino Prince Plate (1600m) but Widdup is certain there is more to come.
"If he would have went straight today you would have seen a far better win but he won and that's the main thing," Widdup said.
"I doubt Peter will push him too far this time because he's still an immature type of horse but I think definitely in the autumn he's going to be thereabouts."
Gallatin was snookered well back on the rails but a ground-saving ride from Reith ensured the Street Cry gelding was within striking distance of the leaders at the 200m.
But twice he threatened to throw the race away in the straight. His second shift was more abrupt than the first as Reith had to pull his mount off the leader's heels before closing the deal over the last 50m.
