Tommy Berry is preparing to fight a Hong Kong riding ban to keep the prized Magic Millions mount on impressive Warwick Farm winner Echo Gal.
Berry, who had an armchair ride on Echo Gal as the Star Thoroughbreds filly blitzed her opposition in the TAB Rewards Maiden Plate on Wednesday, is appealing a 10-meeting suspension from Sunday's International meeting at Sha Tin.
Because the suspension is based on Hong Kong meetings, Berry won't be able to return to the saddle until January 15 - four days after the Magic Millions Classic is run at the Gold Coast.
"I started to put some processes in place today about an appeal," Berry said.
"Hopefully I can stay here and have it heard but if I have to go back to Hong Kong I will because I think this filly is definitely worth it."
Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Echo Gal opened a $26 chance in first Magic Millions markets on Tuesday but she attracted immediate support, forcing her quote into $9 before her Warwick Farm victory.
Not surprisingly, bookmakers reacted again and Echo Gal now shares the second line of betting at $7.50 behind joint favourites Oakleigh Girl and Sheer Style.
Echo Gal was sent out a $1.55 chance on Wednesday and the result was never in doubt as she mustered pace from the barrier to share the lead before settling outside the speed.
"She had to do a bit of work early to cross them and I was pleased with the way she pulled away," Berry said.
"I am tipping her last furlong wouldn't have been overly quick because she floated with me down the straight.
"When she gets a bit of competition she really goes on. I think she will improve off that."
Berry first rose to prominence as a jockey when he rode Karuta Queen to win the 2011 Magic Millions and he backed up 12 months later to win on Driefontein who beat stablemate No Looking Back on protest.
Driefontein had her lead-up run to the Magic Millions in the BJ McLachlan Stakes in Brisbane and stable spokesman Mark Newnham says Echo Gal is likely to follow the same route.
A Group Three race, the BJ McLachlan will be run at Doomben on December 28.
