Trainer Damien Williams is keeping faith in Morant's ability to deliver on his early-career promise despite a winless run in Melbourne.
The seven-year-old began his career in Perth where he won a Listed race and was close-up despite finishing eighth in the 2011 Winterbottom Stakes won by Ortensia.
Morant is yet to win a race since joining Williams's Cranbourne stable last year with his best effort in Melbourne a second in the Group Three Sandown Stakes in the spring of 2012.
At his first run this campaign, the gelding finished 12th in the Listed MSS Security Sprint on Melbourne Cup day, an effort Williams says can be forgotten because he was knocked over early and never got into the race.
He was more upbeat about the horse's last-start fourth at Caulfield when he peaked on his run.
"He ran a good race but it ended about 50 metres from the line when we thought he was going to make third," Williams said.
Williams said Morant had improved since that race and with a 3kg weight drop on Saturday to 55kg in the ISIS Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, the trainer remained hopeful a win was imminent.
However, he conceded Morant's racing pattern presented a challenge.
"He's one dimensional - if you don't ride him back he's not going to hit the line and when you ride him back he needs a lot of luck," Williams said.
"He only has a short sprint so if you ride him forward he won't finish it off."
Dwayne Dunn has been aboard Morant at both starts this preparation and also rode him in two trials before he resumed on November 5.
"He has done a lot of work with the horse and being one of the top riders in the country it gives us a good chance," Williams said.
"Everyone wants that picture on the wall so hopefully Saturday is our day."
