Hadiklaim upstages blue bloods for Waller

A horse named after a date growers' co-operative in Israel has claimed the scalp of two blue-blooded first starters at Canterbury.

In a result that surprised even her trainer Chris Waller, Hadiklaim took out the TAB ipad App Handicap (1100m) on Wednesday.

The race was used to launch the careers $450,000 yearling purchase Celebrities Choice, a half-sister to Group One winner Gathering, and Taste Of Heaven, the latest progeny from outstanding broodmare Shantha's Choice.

But they were upstaged by Hadiklaim, a filly whose dam's best racetrack result was a maiden win in country Victoria.

Surprisingly for a Waller-trained runner, Hadiklaim ($26) snuck under the guard of punters with the heavily backed favourite Celebrities Choice ($2.05) finishing third and Taste Of Heaven fifth after leading.

Waller has long held a good opinion of the filly and harboured Magic Millions Classic hopes for her as a youngster before she injured a hind leg.

"She got hurt in the paddock. She couldn't walk for a long time," Waller said.

"We haven't put her under much pressure and then she trialled on the synthetic track and you really don't get a line on them which is disappointing. She got beaten six lengths there but still trialled pretty well.

"We turned up here today trying to get a line on her and she's blown them away."

Hadiklaim is nominated for the Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast on January 11 but the 1400-metre race is "unlikely".

"You've got to be pretty seasoned to go up there," Waller said.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Tamariz is one horse who will head to the Gold Coast following a dominant 1900-metre victory, bringing to fruition a plan Star Thoroughbreds' Denise Martin hatched seven months ago.

"He won a race at the beginning of the year at Kembla Grange and I said to the owners, `I know it's seven months away and I would never normally plan that far out but why don't we set him for the Magic Millions Cup'," Martin said.

Star Thoroughbred-owned horses have won the feature for the past two years with Tamariz to be given the chance to emulate the feats of stablemates Kinnersley and Kontiki Park.
