As always, Gai Waterhouse has a strong team of youngsters heading to the major two-year-old features with none showing more than Fighting Sun, a dominant winner of the Canonbury Stakes.
Waterhouse has won the $3.5 million Slipper five times and can see no reason why No.6 is not in her grasp this year after the Northern Meteor colt toyed with his rivals at Rosehill on Saturday.
Only Darley filly Earthquake sits above Fighting Sun in Golden Slipper markets and she will run in next week's Blue Diamond Stakes before a decision is made whether she returns to Sydney.
Sent out at $1.60, Fighting Sun strolled past stablemate Mr Cha Cha ($12) to win by three lengths with Guelph's little brother Ghibellines ($5.50) somewhat intractable before running on for third.
"He is a serious horse," Waterhouse said.
"The horse he beat is very smart but the winner has everything you want to see.
"We put blinkers on because he ran away from the semaphore board in his trial.
"He is still improving and we'll see about the Silver Slipper. It depends where I decide to run Law. I'd like to keep them apart."
While the trainer was measured in her assessment, jockey Tommy Berry could not contain his enthusiam, waving to the crowd after he passed the post.
"I am really excited," Berry said.
"He is a really laidback colt but once he pings out he is all class.
"I will be doing everything I can to stay on him. He is just a really good colt."
Berry won his first Golden Slipper last year on the Waterhouse-trained Overreach.
Earthquake remains at $4.60 with the TAB for the Slipper on April 5 with Fighting Sun at $6.
