Peter Moody is weighing up an Oakleigh Plate start for three-year-old Thermal Current but is convinced stablemate Flamberge is ready to give the Group One sprint a real shake.
Thermal Current had to be scratched from last Saturday's Group One Lightning Stakes due to a minor blood disorder.
Moody said the colt was back on track and would run in either the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) against older horses on Saturday at Caulfield or the Group Three Zeditave Stakes (1200m) against his own age.
Moody believes Group Three winner Thermal Current can be a Newmarket Handicap player and said he would think it over before Wednesday's acceptance deadline as to which Caulfield race would be the best lead-in.
"His blood was good yesterday so he had a gallop here (at Caulfield) this morning and his work was pleasing," Moody said.
"He's a three-year-old sprinter and I think he's improved rapidly off his spring campaign.
He admitted the colt was attractively weighted with 50kg in the Oakleigh Plate.
Four-year-old Flamberge has been freshened since his 2-1/4 length Group Three Standish Handicap (1200m) win at Flemington on January 1 and Moody is bullish about his Oakleigh Plate prospects on the back of a pleasing second in a barrier trial at Cranbourne last week.
"He is flying," Moody said.
"He trialled superbly beside Bel Sprinter the other day."
Moody noted Vlad Duric was keen to keep the ride on Flamberge at the light weight of 52kg.
"He'll never get a better chance in a big race," Moody said.
The Moody-trained Brilliant Bisc is also in line to back-up from Saturday's unplaced Lightning Stakes run.
A number of other Oakleigh Plate contenders worked at Caulfield on Tuesday, with likely favourite Lankan Rupee delighting jockey Craig Newitt.
"He ran home in 24 seconds and change (for the last 400m) and he never got out of first gear," Newitt said.
"He'll go there on Saturday and he's the one they've got to beat."
Jason Warren took topweight Bel Sprinter to Caulfield for a course proper gallop and believes he has him ready to make his presence felt in the race he has targeted since the end of the spring.
