Vastly improved galloper Typhoon Red will get his chance in the Queensland winter carnival after giving trainer Kevin Kemp a record equalling fourth Weetwood Handicap.

Jockey Nozi Tomizawa literally climbed up off the turf to steer Typhoon Red ($10) home to a head victory over stablemate Kempelly ($4.40) with a neck to Steel Zip ($9) in Toowoomba's premier race on Saturday night.

Tomizawa fell from Spinada in the first race and was then tossed off again in the saddling enclosure aboard late scratching Bushy in the second race.

He had ridden both Typhoon Red and Kempelly in their recent Brisbane wins but Kemp told him to ride Typhoon Red in the Listed 1200m sprint.

"When I ride Kempelly I talk to him in Japanese so I yelled out to him to stop when we got near the finish," Tomizawa said.

Kemp joins Bill Neilsen as the trainer of a record four winners of the race.

His previous successes were with Startell in 2001 and dual winner Tellem in 2005 and 2007.

Kemp is a big fan of the new racing surface at Toowoomba but admitted he initially wondered how Typhoon Red would handle it.

"Typhoon Red won races by ten lengths on the former cushion track but I wasn't sure how he would go on the new surface," he said.

Typhoon Red is raced by his breeders and long-time stable clients Graham Thomas and his wife Lyn.

Kemp believes Typhoon Red can be competitive during the winter carnival and his next task could be in the $175,000 Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast on May 3.

In a postscript to Weetwood night apprentice Brooke Stower was suspended for three weeks for causing interference to Tomizawa's mount Spinada in the first race.
