Cox Plate-winning jockey Chad Schofield is almost certain to avoid surgery on neck fractures suffered in a fall at Cranbourne.
Schofield fractured his C3 vertebra after falling from Made Of Ice in the Procon Developments Handicap.
Made Of Ice was euthanised after crashing into the fallen Donarchie, ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson, early in the race with the backwash of the incident causing Steven Arnold to be dislodged from Exclusive Choice.
Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keeffe says Schofield will remain in the Alfred Hospital for the next few days.
"The doctors have told Chad they don't think he'll need surgery to stabilise the injury," O'Keeffe said.
"They'll closely monitor him over the next few days but they think it could be an old injury that has flared up dramatically in the fall."
O'Keeffe said Schofield, who won his fourth Group One race aboard Sonntag in Saturday's Queensland Derby, would be out for an indefinite period.
Schofield's parents, Glyn and Tiffany, flew to Melbourne on Sunday night to be at their son's bedside.
O'Keeffe expected Thompson to be released from Dandenong Hospital late on Monday afternoon after he was concussed in the fall.
Arnold also suffered concussion but was resting at home after he was released from hospital on Sunday night.
O'Keeffe said both Arnold and Thompson would undergo similar concussion tests to those taken by footballers before the pair resumes riding.
