Aussie jockey Hugh Bowman rode his second double in as many meetings at Hong Kong's Sha Tin meeting on Wednesday.
Bowman started the midweek meeting with a bang, steering home the Danny Shum-trained Sledgehammer in the opener before getting the best out of Goldland Dancer from the Sean Woods stable in the second.
He was unlucky not to add a third when blocked for a run aboard the Peter Ho-trained Unbeatable Guts before finishing a short head from the winner Cheers Victories.
After a slow start to his Hong Kong riding stint, Bowman is starting to find his feet with the double coming quickly on the back of his two winners at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Tommy Berry was also on the winners’ list, riding the second of Casper Fownes’ two victors, Gun Pit.
John Size maintained his three win advantage over fellow trainer Casper Fownes after both stables had winning doubles at the meeting.
Fownes went desperately close to cutting back the lead, running second in three other races, including narrow defeats in the fifth and eighth races of the evening.
Joao Moreira, who rode the second of Size’s winners Master Sommelier, predicted the duel between Size and Fownes to go right down to the wire.
"I’m pleased to have given John another winner – this looks like a real battle down to the finish for the trainers’ title,” Moreira told the South China Morning Post.
Premiership leading jockey Zac Purton went without a winner at the meeting while Master Sommelier was Moreira’s sole winner.
With seven meetings remaining until the close of the Hong Kong season, Purton holds an 18 win lead over Moreira.
