Weight relief for Press Report at Rosehill

Friday 1 August 2014, 3:18pm

The chance to take advantage of a major weight turnaround on her last start means Press Report will have her first run as a three-year-old a week earlier than planned.

The filly was checked twice during her fourth, 7-1/2 lengths behind Liberation, over 1200m at Rosehill on July 19 and steps up to 1300m at the same track on Saturday.

Trainer Lee Curtis had planned for her next start to be the Listed Rosebud but another look at the program convinced him to change tack in an attempt to give Press Report her best chance to break her maiden.

"This race initially slipped under the radar but I had another look at the program and realised how well she would be weighted," Curtis said.

"It's a ten kilo turnaround on the winner from their last race which is massive.

"If we went to the Rosebud she would be a lot higher because it's a Listed race and her second in the Silver Slipper puts her up in the weights."

That second to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Mossfun remains a highlight of Press Report's five starts which have also yielded a debut second to Slipper fifth Memorial.

The filly carried 57kg last time out, 3kg more than the Gai Waterhouse-trained Liberation.

With in-form apprentice Winona Costin's claim, Press Report will carry just 50kg on Saturday with Liberation on 57kg.

Costin, who is indentured to Waterhouse, has ridden the Curtis-trained Cocktail Time to two recent midweek wins.

"Winona is riding really well and it's good to have her on Press Report," Curtis said.

"But she knows Glyn (Schofield) goes back on her for her next start."

That next start will be the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 23, three weeks before the Group One Golden Rose (1400m).

Liberation is the TAB's odds-on favourite for the first Sydney race of the new season.
