Promising three-year-old Lucky Tom is working nicely towards an ambitious Melbourne campaign which could culminate in the Cox Plate.
Veteran Gold Coast trainer Harold Norman makes no secret he believes Lucky Tom is potentially the best horse he has trained in 40 years.
Lucky Tom has not run since leading all the way to win the Listed Phoenix Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
After the win Norman decided to spell Lucky Tom with the Melbourne spring carnival in mind.
"By spelling him then, it gave us enough time to bring him back and get him properly ready for the spring," Norman said."
"He will probably have a trial soon and then run in a three-year-old race in Brisbane.
"After that we will push south for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, then the Caulfield Guineas and hopefully the Cox Plate."
Lucky Tom has won two of his five starts and on paper the lofty aims might look beyond his reach.
But Norman is adamant Lucky Tom is up to the task.
"I have no doubt he is potentially the best horse I have had," he said.
"We haven't seen the best of him because at his first three starts there were excuses for his defeats."
"Then he won his next two starts by running them into the ground. I don't know how good he is because no horse has been able to get up beside him in a race and make him go."
"The Cox Plate is a great race for three-year-olds and a great race for those who can race up near the pace."
Norman believes Lucky Tom will run a strong 2000m through his dam Tattyam who is by Yamanin Vital.
"There is no reason he won't get a strong 1600 or 2000 metres," he said.
The Caulfield Guineas is on October 11, two weeks before the Cox Plate.
