Paul Messara is in the process of reducing his stable numbers but will be keeping a strong hold on Scissor Kick, winner of the Listed Rosebud at Randwick.

Messara, who is taking control of the breeding arm of the family business, Arrowfield Stud, will keep a select group in work at Scone.

Scissor Kick's win on Saturday has set him up for Group One targets in Sydney and Melbourne and a future at the famous stud.

Godolphin's Sarajevo was all the rage at $2.60 for the Listed Rosebud (1200m) but after getting back early, he failed to find a run in the straight and finished fourth.

Scissor Kick ($6.50) had no such worries, stretching out to beat Better Land ($6) by three-quarters of a length with Inkling ($5.50) another half-neck third under topweight of 59kg.

"I'm not going to hand in my (trainer's) licence and this is one horse who will definitely be staying," Messara said.

"I think he can go all the way. We will take him to the Run To The Rose, the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas.

"I thought this race might be too short but we wanted to see how he measured up against these horses and he's done the job.

"The ones who come out and surprise you are often the ones who go on with it."

The colt's jockey Tye Angland was in no doubt about the quality of the win.

"You won't see the best of him until he gets up to 1400 metres or a mile," he said.

"He is a beautiful horse. From the word go when I got on him he felt great.

"He is collected and well mannered which is what you want.

"Whatever 1400-metre three-year-old race he goes in, he will win."

Scissor Kick firmed from $35 to $9 for the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) on September 13 with Sarajevo still favourite at $7.

Almalad, who shares the second line with Scissor Kick, had a race-day gallop at Randwick in preparation for his return in the Run To The Rose in two weeks.

Messara's father John, the managing owner of Scissor Kick and the proprietor of Arrowfield, was already planning the colt's future.

"Take a look at his pedigree," he said.

"I feel a stallion coming on."

Arrowfield stands Scissor Kick's sire Redoute's Choice who was the Australian champion of last season.

The colt is out of Quest For Fame mare Back Pass and traces back to champion European racehorse and sire Dansili.
