Injuries have taken a toll on the biggest names in Anthony Cummings' stable but the early-season signs are promising about the Randwick trainer figuring in the best spring races.

As Cummings keeps a conservative route with the comebacks of BMW winner Fiveandahalfstar and no-nonsense sprinter Fontelina, he still has enough talent on offer to leave his mark on the Sydney and Melbourne carnivals.

Top sprinter Villa Verde is close to resuming, As Needed ran promising figures in his Randwick win last week and there is a sense of anticipation three more horses can announce their claims when they return at Rosehill on Saturday.

After two weeks of the new racing season, Cummings leads the way in NSW with seven winners.

And bookmakers think he is a reasonable chance of adding to that tally with at least one Rosehill winner as he welcomes back Black Caviar's relation Scandiva, South Australian Derby placegetter Best Case and Epsom hopeful Spy Decoder.

"The stable has some nice horses for Rosehill," Cummings said.

"A couple of them are already proven in stakes grade and there's a chance another could be during the spring."

Because of her pedigree, Scandiva will command the most interest of Cummings' runners when she resumes in the ClubsNSW Handicap.

Scandiva is the 10th of 12 foals produced so far by the Snippets mare Scandinavia, the grand-dam of Black Caviar.

Her future as a broodmare is already assured but the value of her progeny will improve sharply if she can better her Group One placing in last year's ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.

"She was out of sorts for a long time but she is back and in good form," Cummings said.

But as a $15 chance in early markets, her first-up prospects have been largely ignored and bookmakers have marked Best Case at a similar quote in the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Handicap.

Best Case is entered for the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup and shapes as a stayer to be reckoned with.

"He's now qualified for all races and we'll give him the opportunity at a decent level," Cummings said.

Spy Decoder is quoted the shortest of the trio as a $6 chance in the St Johns Park Bowling Club Handicap and he will be out to join As Needed on a path to the Epsom Handicap.
