Living On A Prayer makes most of Qld stint

Saturday 23 August 2014, 3:31pm

Consistent country winner Living On A Prayer will continue his Brisbane stopover after posting his first metropolitan victory at Doomben on Saturday.

Living On A Prayer ($6) showed plenty of fight to beat Mr Favulous ($3.40) by a short head in the Queensland X-Ray Handicap (1200m).

Originally trained at Wagga Wagga by Dave Heywood, Living On A Prayer has won 10 races but Saturday's Doomben victory was his first in city company.

It was the gelding's third Queensland start after running last in the Rockhampton Newmarket and then winning north Queensland's top feature sprint the Townsville Cleveland Bay Handicap.

The now-retired trainer Terry Butts had Living On A Prayer for the Townsville win and the gelding was then transferred to John Morrisey on the Gold Coast.

"Living On A Prayer will have a couple more runs here before going back to his original trainer at Wagga for the Town Plate down there," Morrisey said.

The win continued the good run of Morrisey and apprentice Beau Appo who have had five recent winners at various tracks.

Meanwhile, trainer Rob Heathcote believes there are more wins in store for Volkhere after his easy win in the Bell Plumbing Handicap (2020m).

Volkhere was declared the weight certainty of the day as he got into the race with 1kg less than he carried to win an Eagle Farm open handicap at his previous start.

"He did get in very well at the weights here but even if we get 57kg next time we can claim and still have the minimum. There are more wins ahead," Heathcote said.

Smart mare Lanieri scored her fourth win in a row in the Mitavite Handicap (1200m) and could have one more start before a spell.

Trainer Lindsay Gough is looking to next year's winter carnival with the mare.

"She can be a bit hard to handle so I don't know about taking her to Sydney in the autumn. The winter here is more logical," Gough said.

Apprentice Luke Tarrant dedicated his win on Gully Command ($5) to his master Frank Phillips who is in hospital after suffering a health turn at Ipswich races two weeks ago.
